Upcoming Improvement near Áak’w Landing

Huna Totem Corporation (HTC) and AJT Mining Properties, Inc. (AJT) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance Juneau’s waterfront around HTC’s upcoming Áak’w Landing project. This partnership aims to revitalize the area by removing AJT’s aging dock and improving public safety and sustainability. The development, set for completion in 2027, will facilitate year-round public use and cultural education, incorporating totem poles to honor Tlingit heritage. The project is also expected to significantly reduce emissions from cruise ships and alleviate downtown congestion, marking a significant step toward a more vibrant and sustainable waterfront in Juneau.

2025 Traditional Games

Registration is open for the 2025 Traditional Games, set for April 4-6 at Juneau-Douglas High School, co-hosted by the Sealaska Heritage Institute and the Central Council Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska.

This annual event celebrates Alaska Native cultural heritage through competitions in ancient sports that emphasize strength, agility, and endurance, with divisions for middle school, high school, and adults. Athletes will compete in 12 traditional events, such as the Scissor Broad Jump and One-Foot-High Kick, reflecting survival skills integral to Indigenous peoples. The games will be livestreamed on SHI’s YouTube channel, and various sponsors support the event.

Located in a historic downtown building in Alaska’s capital, the restaurant includes a deli, kitchen, and a casual dining room for 50 guests. Chef Beau Schooler, a multiple James Beard nominee, crafts pizzas using Pacific Northwest flours and Pennsylvania’s Caputo Brothers Creamery cheese, with classic and seasonal toppings. The wood-fired oven allows diners to watch their pizzas cook, making it a cozy spot, especially on rainy days. The Downtown Business Association congratulated the restaurant on this recognition.

Earth To Beer: Local Collaboration for Global Impact

Devil’s Club Brewing Co and Southeast Alaska Land Trust (SEALT) are launching a collaborative beer, Earth To Beer Locally Foraged IPA, on April 20, 2024, to coincide with Earth Day. This initiative aims to support SEALT’s goal of raising $250,000 for their Acquisition Fund, which helps protect vital natural areas in Southeast Alaska. The IPA is brewed with Salmon Safe certified hops and locally foraged ingredients, reflecting SEALT’s conservation efforts. Devil’s Club will donate 10% of sales from this beer to SEALT. This release is part of a broader national campaign involving over 30 breweries, promoting environmental sustainability through special beer offerings.
